Mouzas Dimitrios

Mayor of Nea Orestiada

Dear friends,

Nea Orestiada was founded in 1923 by the refugees of Eastern Thrace. Today it is a modern town with an advantageous international economic location, right next to the developing markets of Eastern Europe. The remarkable works of infrastructure, and the industrial and commercial activity of the area propagate the upward course of the town.

At the same time, it is a town which boasts of its athletic and cultural activity , an optimistic and creative town.

The Municipality of Nea Orestiada is motivated by the deep love and concern for our area, and fights hard on a daily basis for the progress and well-being of our town. We also recognize the help and cooperation

Of all bodies but also of our active and creative citizens.

Nea Orestiada is a welcoming town which opens itself to whoever wishes to visit it and discover its beauties.

It is a town worth exploring.

Nea Orestiada is the most northern municipality of Greece. It is situated two kilometres away- in direct line- from the river Evros, which constitutes the natural boundary between Greece and Turkey. By road, It is 25 km away from Adrianoupolis ( Edirne), 64 km away from the three- party border among Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, 110 km away from the capital of the prefecture, Alexandroupoli, 458 km away from Thessaloniki, and 961 km from Athens. Finally, it is 260 km away from Konstantinoupolis (Istanbul), 380 km from away from Sofia, and 220 km away from Plovdiv. It is linked with the rest of the country, by road and rail, as well as by air through the airport of “Dimokritos” in Alexandroupoli.

The town was blessed by Metropolite Polikarpos, envisaged by Political Commander of Thrace Spyros Dasios, and demarcated by civil engineer Giorgos Magklis in 1923. Its first Mayor, Stefanos Dimitriou exclaimed pointing at the rainbow: “ Here we will all come to build our Orestiada, it will become great, it will progress, it will become first in the area of Evros. Look, the sign is sent to us by God”.

The name of the town and its history

Orestis, the matricide, haunted by Erinyes (deities symbolizing remorse of conscience), sought advice at the oracles, where he was told to wash himself at the confluence of three rivers to expiate his crime. At the confluence of the rivers Ardas, Evros and Tountzas he washed himself, he was redeemed and built the town of Orestiada. According to another version, the Nymphs, who were also called “Orestiades” lived at the confluence of the three rivers, in the profuse waters and dense vegetation and this is where the name of the area came from. In this area, the ancient Thracian people “ Odrysai” had lived since the 6th century B.C, having Oskoudama as their capital. In 127 A.C, Emperor Andrianos names the town “Andrianoupolis” and in 1920 the Authorities name the suburb of Karagatz “Orestiada”. In 1923, during the conference of Lausanne, our allies submitted to Inonu’s pressures, who demanded great war indemnities from Greece. Eleftherios Venizelos reacted and French General Pelle suggested allotting Orestiada (Karagatz) to the Turks. The inhabitants started to abandon their birthplace and became refugees. On the 4th of June, 1923 the first refugees arrived and built the new town.

Nea Orestiada, with the creativity and hard work of its inhabitants, is turning into a wonderful modern town. It is the seat of the Municipality, which bears the same name, and its best advantage is its excellent town planning, which is unique in Greece. The latest census has proved the rapid development of the town. Municipal District of Nea Orestiada: 17,194 inhabitants. Kapodistrian Municipality of Nea Orestiada: 21,730 inhabitants (including the Districts of Ampelakia, Thourio, Lepti, Megali Doxipara, Neo Himonio, Neohori, Patagi, Pyrgos, Sakkos, Xandras and Valtos).

Education (Παιδεία)

All forms and stages of education exist in Nea Orestiada.

We provide our citizens with four child care stations, ten kindergartens, seven Elementary schools, one special care school for disabled children, three Secondary schools, two Lyceums (High schools of General Education) and two Technical High schools. Moreover, a laboratory of specialized professional education and training is being run by the municipality (namely KETEK, IEK and KEK)

The fourth branch of the Thracean University of Dimokritos (the other three being in Xanthi, Komotini and Alexandroupoli) was founded in Nea Orestiada in 1998, with two individual directions of studies: Agricultural Development and Forestry, and Environment and Natural Resources Management.

The main concern of our Municipality is the perfect running of all stages of education, brought about by the excellent cooperation among all educational bodies. Should any problems arise, they come to an immediate solution making the education offered in Nea Orestiada one of really high standard.

Development (Ανάπτυξη)

The geographical location of Nea Orestiada, in connection with the determining changes which took place in the neighboring countries mainly during the last decade, and the changes being in the pipeline in neighboring Turkey, make our town a starting point and main attraction point for development in the broader geographical area.

Furthermore, the short distances of Nea Orestiada from the capitals of the neighboring countries and the political stability of Greece contribute to the necessary favorable prerequisites for economic cooperation, investments and development in the broader area of Eastern Thrace.

Finally, the vertical road connection to Egnatia Road, the new industrial area built, the great works of infrastructure, the designation of Nea Orestiada as the seat of the Municipality of Kapodistrias, constitute the best foundations for a successful future course.

Agricultural Development (Αγροτική Ανάπτυξη)

Nea Orestiada is situated right in the middle of a fertile agricultural area fit for cultivation, of 1.050.000 square km  , with profuse water supplies. The chief financial income comes from agricultural and stock-raising products. The main occupation of most of our farmers is the cultivation of corn, cotton, soft-type and hard-type wheat, potato, asparagus and sunflower. On the other hand, our stock-raisers are occupied with the raising of cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs.

Moreover, a modern ostrich-raising unit runs in the Municipal District of Megali Doxipara.

Social Solidarity ( Κοινωνική Αλληλεγγύη)

Our Municipality provides elderly citizens with three halls of KAPI (recreation centres for elderly citizens), two of which are located in the town of Nea Orestiada and the third one in the Municipal district of Valtos. These centres count with 1,150 registered members and run social solidarity programmes on:
